Wojciech Szczesny reveals “signal from Arsene Wenger” over #1 position

Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will be Arsenal’s number one in the coming season with Lukasz Fabianski as his backup.

The youngster confessed that he received a “clear signal” from manager Arsene Wenger in pre-season that he would defend the Arsenal goal starting this Saturday against Newcastle away from home.

The 21-year old added that he is aware of the pressure he will be under when the official season kicks off especially since reserve goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is a top-class backup who will be ready to take advantage of any mistakes he will make.

Last season, the Arsenal boss opted to start the season with Spain’s Manuel Almunia who is set to leave the Club together with striker Nicklas Bendtner and full back Emmanuel Eboue during the summer transfer window.

Ahead of the new season, Szczesny said:

I received a clear signal from Arsene Wenger before the new season that I would be the number one keeper in the Arsenal goal. The other keepers in the team must compete with me, but I do not plan to give up.

Of course, I feel a huge pressure. I know very well how good a keeper Lukasz Fabianski is and I must be in top form all the time.
