Why This Summer May Be the Most Testing of Arsene Wenger's Career at Arsenal

No matter how much manager Arsene Wenger tries to gloss over Arsenal's failed attempt to win a trophy last season, the fact remains they underachieved once again.

The Frenchman's reluctance to spend last summer came back to haunt him as Arsenal's squad was left exposed in defence and, perhaps more crucially, in goal.

After achieving success in his early years with Arsenal, the tide of support for Wenger appears to be on the turn. Fans are becoming frustrated at seeing them surrender the title race to Chelsea and Manchester United.

For successive years, the end of season lap of honour has been conducted in front of a few thousand fans, with the others quick to head for the door at the Emirates and forget about another season that might have been.

If that feeling is sinking in prevalent among the supporters, then you can be assured the players sense it as well.

Wenger has been adamant that he regards his current side as capable of winning a trophy; all well and good seeing it Arsene, but they have to actually do it.

In recent seasons, he has hammered home the point that he sees no reason to sign a host of new players, while assuring those currently on club's books that next year is going to be their year. However, soon enough, that belief is going to evaporate - and it could be this summer.

No wonder then that the end of season coincides with the start of speculation about Cesc Fabregas's future, only this time there is more evidence to suggest he will leave the club.

Both The Daily Star Sunday and The People report that the Spain international is wanted by Inter Milan, who are willing to meet Arsenal's valuation of the player by making an offer in excess of £50 million.

Wenger wants to keep hold of his captain, but Fabregas has made no secret of his desire to win trophies. And, at the moment, that is something Wenger cannot guarantee.
