Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has claimed that he hopes Arsenal transfer target Jan Vertonghen joins him at Eastlands.

Kompany, who is a Belgian international team mate of Vertonghen, believes the versatility of the Ajax man could be useful for Manchester City next season despite rumoured interest from Arsenal.

“You hear 40 names per month of players who could move to Manchester City. However, it is not a coincidence that Vertonghen is linked with the club,” Kompany told Goal.com.

“Jan is ready to make the next step and is good enough for Manchester City. I am sure that he will succeed at his next club, regardless of whether he joins us or decides to move elsewhere. He is simply a fantastic footballer.”

Another Belgian, Thomas Vermaelen, has recently expressed his desire to see Vertonghen at Arsenal next season.
