Defoe linked with North London switch

The Daily Star has reported that out-of-favour striker Jermain Defoe could be set to be the 9th player to make the move from local rivals Spurs to Arsenal. According to the article Defoe has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Arsène Wenger and could join the club for a fee of around £10 million, having fallen out of favour with Harry Redknapp.

Speaking to the press earlier this week Defoe made it clear that he is unhappy at the lack of opportunities he has had this season, and suggested that he may be forced to move clubs in order to play regular first team football.

“When you feel like you are working hard, training hard and being professional and then you are not playing, it is difficult.”

“It has been really, really hard to be honest. Players come and go, that is just football and it is out of my hands.”

Although a deal that brings Defoe to the Emirates is extremely unlikely, the fact remains that Spurs are looking to generate some extra cash to strengthen their squad as they set their targets on a Champions League place next season. Defoe may get the move he desires but it won’t be to Arsenal.

There are only three players I would even consider taking from Spurs: van de Vaart, Luka Modric or Vedran Corluka. I don’t want to Defoe; I don’t think that he is good enough for a team that plays consistent Champions League football.

True – Arsène Wenger is actively searching for a new striker (a search made even more important after Nicklas Bendtner made his desire to leave the club this summer extremely clear). But it is ridiculous to think that Defoe is the man who should partner Robin van Persie next season. I really don’t see how a player that is being kept out of the Tottenham first team by Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko has a place at Arsenal.
