2010/2011 season review, Part 2.1: Average player ratings – Goalkeepers

After spending hours going through all the articles I posted this season to “extract” all player ratings, I can finally publish the average ratings for each and every Arsenal player.

As I managed to end up with not just the average rating but also every single rating I gave, I am splitting this season’s overall ratings part in four, one for every department of the pitch. We of course start with the goalkeepers.

Manuel Almunia

Rated in: 13 game(s)

vs Liverpool: 4.5
vs Blackburn: 7.5
vs Bolton: 6.5
vs S.C. Braga: 7
vs Sunderland: 7.5
vs West Brom: 4
vs Huddersfield Town: 6
vs Leyton Orient: 5
vs Leyton Orient: 6
vs Barcelona: 8
vs Manchester United: 7
vs West Brom: 0
vs Blackburn Rovers: 2

Average Rating: 5.46

I consider starting with Manuel Almunia in goal as one of the main reasons why Arsene Wenger is to be held responsible for this season’s failure. Everyone, even the biggest fan of our manager wanted a new goalkeeper last summer but what was the result? The Spaniard in goal.

To be fair, Manuel did well in half of the games he featured in and was superb against Barcelona but he was back at this shocking worst in his last two games of the season as he left his goal like a crazy man against West Brom and was as equally disastrous one week later against Blackburn.

Lukasz Fabianski

Rated in: 19 game(s)

vs Tottenham: 5.5
vs Partizan: 8
vs Chelsea: 8
vs Birmingham: 7.5
vs Shakhtar: 7
vs Manchester City: 9
vs West Ham: 7
vs Newcastle: 4
vs Wolves: 9
vs Everton: 8
vs Tottenham: 6
vs Sporting Braga: 6
vs Aston Villa: 6
vs Fulham: 7
vs Partizan Belgrade: 7
vs Chelsea: 5.5
vs Wigan: 6
vs Birmingham City: 7
vs Manchester City: 7

Average Rating: 6.87

Coming in to replace the Spaniard who suffered a shoulder injury when we played West Brom at the Emirates, Lukasz is surprisingly one of the best players according to my ratings. Now granted, he only played 19 games so it is important to understand that when a player doesn’t feature a lot the probability of a very good average rating is high.

But I must say that the Pole was very solid in goal and only in three occasions his rating was below 6. The goal he gifted to Andy Carroll when we played Newcastle at the Emirates was sad to see but I want to archive Lukasz – this season – for his amazing last-minute save when we played Wolves, away from home.

Wojciech Szczęsny

Rated in: 23 game(s)

vs Newcastle: 8
vs Wigan: 6
vs Manchester United: 7
vs Leeds United: 6.5
vs Ipswich Town: 5
vs West Ham: 7
vs Leeds United: 6
vs Wigan Athletic: 6
vs Ipswich Town: 6
vs Everton: 6.5
vs Newcastle United: 7
vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: 6.5
vs Barcelona: 7.5
vs Stoke City: 7.5
vs Birmingham City: 5.5
vs Sunderland: 8.5
vs Liverpool: 7.5
vs Tottenham Hotspur: 8
vs Bolton Wanderers: 8.5
vs Manchester United: 8
vs Stoke City: 6
vs Aston Villa: 6.5
vs Fulham: 6

Average Rating: 6.83

And then came the young one. Many believe we need an experienced goalkeeper as Wojciech still lacks something. What he definitely doesn’t lack is self-confidence and fighting spirit. Just like Lukasz, he also went straight into the starting eleven after taking advantage of injuries and I must say, he didn’t disappoint.

His only below-6 rating was in the game we played against Ipswich Town away from home as he made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes during the game but all in all, I wouldn’t be disappointed if the 21-year old starts in goal next season.
